Manjulata Panda, till recently was your non-descript housewife struggling hard to make amends meet of the meagre income that her husband earned. However, her association with SKS MicroFinance changed her life overnight…well almost!
Manjulata lives in Gobindpali, in the Bargarh district of Odisha. Her husband operated a small grocery store in the village which was the only source of income for the family of four. The lack of a steady source of income often forced the family to borrow from moneylenders at exorbitant interest rates. Multiple borrowing led the family to be stuck in a cycle of poverty.
A chance encounter with SKS Microfinance, turned around Manjulata’s life. As a member, she was given skill training and utilized her first loan to start a fast food preparation and supply business. Starting from scratch, today Manjulata has a stable income of Rs. 15,000 per month by selling snacks and fast food. Her husband has joined hands and helps in marketing the supply to vendors in and around Bargarh. Some of her popular snacks include cakes, and salty snacks such as mudku and nali.
With an assured access to microcredit, Manjulata and her family have never felt the need to approach a money lender for credit. She is very optimistic about her future and believes that her children will also have a bright one.
